AJA Ki Pro Ultra
AJA Video Systems recently announced their latest product, the Ki Pro Ultra. DT Engineering was proud to do all the mechanical design for this cool product. Here’s a quick tour of the concept-to-production design processes and challenges for the Ki Pro Ultra.
DT Engineering focused mainly on thermal analysis. Because keeping the system properly cooled was a top priority for optimal function, they first performed a series of analyses to determine airflow. Due to the UI and mounting requirements, the vent area was tightly constrained. Additionally, the EMI limited the size of the vent openings. Given these two obstacles, they opted to create "gill" openings for front-to-back cooling. The engineers used CFD analysis to determine the geometry of these gills. This innovative, creative quality allowed the unit to be cooled without compromising on the display features.
Next, DT Engineering tackled the engineering issues. The engineers devised a way to cool the electronics inside of the Ki Pro Ultra, determined structure and strength, and worked within the limitations required by the FCC in terms of EMI and RFI.
During the design process, DT Engineering faced some difficult challenges. Firstly, fitting the large format LCD, UI, and dual SSD bay inside the 2U, half-rack area posed some challenges; they had to exercise creativity to fit all the required features within a small area. Also, per the request of JDID, the ID partner for this project, they designed the Ki Pro Ultra so no hardware – screws, nuts, and bolts – were visible on the cosmetic surfaces. To maintain the sleek look of the Ki Pro Ultra, the engineers dedicated time and ingenuity to conceal the hardware.
The Ki Pro Ultra is now on the shelves and is getting positive feedback from consumers.
From the AJA website (www.aja.com):
"There is no other device that delivers this level of performance in such a compact footprint. Ki Pro Ultra is small and totally flexible; it functions just as beautifully on the desktop, in a rack and even comes with a handle for easy mobility," said AJA President Nick Rashby. "Clients have been asking us to support 4K and UltraHD 60p ProRes HQ recording and the combination of Ki Pro Ultra and Pak1000 media delivers on that demand with the rugged reliability and super functional design that our Ki Pro family of products are known for."
